How it works

  • The analyzer is housed in the body of the aircraft
  • Fibre optic cable carries the laser light from the analyzer to the transceiver (Tx/Rx)
  • The Tx/Rx is mounted on one of the UAV’s winglet and a retro-reflector is mounted on the other
  • Emitted from the Tx/Rx the laser light, it travels over the wingspan of the UAV and is reflected back by the retro-reflector to form the active measurement path
  • The laser is not pointed towards the ground
  • The returning laser light is collected on the Tx/Rx and the signal is carried back to the analyzer via coaxial cable
  • The output of the analyzer is a serial string

UAV Based Gas Detection System Description

The UAV Based Gas Detector (attached to the UAV) will accurately and reliably measure very low level concentrations of methane if it is present in the atmosphere. If the there happens to be a fugitive emission leak when the UAV is driving through the plume, then the analyzer will register the reading and if the concentration exceeds the programmable set point then the local display will sound its audible alarm so the driver can circle around and survey the leak further. That’s as complicated as it gets.
